Increased Competition

There are more and more compact SUVs on the market, and with time, competition has increased. You’re about to change vehicles, but you’re still hesitating between the 2023 Honda CR-V, the Toyota RAV4, the Nissan Rogue and the Kia Sportage.

Which of these vehicles is most likely to give you the most bang for your buck? We answer that question in this blog, revisiting the essential features of each.

Efficient Powertrains

At the outset, it’s only fair to say that all 4 SUVs are good vehicles that deserve special attention, since it’s sometimes in the details that they stand out the most.

To begin with, all 4 compact SUVs are powered by 4-cylinder engines, and three of them offer hybridization. The following table shows the different engines under the hoods of the SUVs compared:

SUV

Fuel engine
Power/Torque

Hybrid engine
Power/Torque

2023 Honda CR-V

1.5 L 4-cylinder turbo engine

190 hp / 179 lb-ft

2.0 L 4-cylinder engine + 2 electric motors

204 hp / 247 lb-ft

2023 Toyota RAV4

2.5 L, 4-cylinder engine

203 hp / 184 lb-ft

2.5 L 4-cylinder engine + 2 electric motors

219 hp / n.a.

2023 Kia Sportage

2.5 L, 4-cylinder engine

187 hp / 178 lb-ft

1.6 turbo 4-cylinder engine + 1 electric motor

227 hp / 258 lb-ft

2023 Nissan Rogue

2.5 L, 4-cylinder engine

181 hp / 181 lb-ft

n.a.

At first glance, the fuel-powered Toyota RAV4 appears to be slightly more powerful than the other SUVs on the list. The Honda CR-V, on the other hand, has a smaller but more powerful turbo engine. In fact, according to Le Guide de l’auto, Honda is among the top 3 most reliable engines.

As for the power of the hybrid engines, they are fairly comparable, but the Kia Sportage offers a little more. In terms of combined performance, we were unable to find data for the RAV4. The difference between the 2023 Honda CR-V hybrid and the Kia Sportage Hybrid remains very minor.

Fuel Consumption

Nowadays, with the ups and downs of the economy and oil companies, fuel consumption is a significant factor to take into account, especially when it comes to buying or leasing a vehicle.

To help you make your choice, we’ve compared the fuel consumption of the four SUVs:

SUV

Fuel consumption (city/highway/combined)

2023 Honda CR-V

8.1 / 6.9 / 7.6

2023 Toyota RAV4

8.8 / 6.8 / 7.9

2023 Kia Sportage

9.3 / 7.4 / 8.4

2023 Nissan Rogue

9.0 / 7.1 / 8.1

In terms of fuel consumption, the Honda CR-V leads, followed by the Toyota RAV4. The other two vehicles go beyond 8.0 L/100 km. Fuel consumption of the compact hybrid SUVs are comparable, with no discernible differences in terms of fuel efficiency.

Vehicle Dimensions

If you’re looking for a vehicle that suits your needs, car size can play a major role, especially if you want passengers to enjoy comfort on long journeys.

SUV

Dimensions
(length/width/height in mm)

2023 Honda CR-V

4,693 / 1,864 / 1,666

2023 Toyota RAV4

4,596 / 1,854 / 1,702

2023 Kia Sportage

4,660 / 1,865 / 1,665

2023 Nissan Rogue

4,648 / 1,840 / 1,689

The CR-V is the longest of all the SUVs compared. The 2023 Honda CR-V interior is spacious, and passengers benefit from both legroom and roominess; and the Toyota RAV4 is the shortest among all the SUVs compared.

Cargo Capacity

You want to be able to carry all the gear you need, and make sure nothing is left behind. Let’s take a closer look at the cargo capacity of the 4 SUVs.

SUV

Cargo capacity

2023 Honda CR-V

1,028 L to 2,166 L

2023 Toyota RAV4

1,059 L to 1,977 L

2023 Kia Sportage

1,036 L to 1,962 L

2023 Nissan Rogue

1,033 L to 2,098 L

Here again, the Honda CR-V offers more cargo capacity (seats down) than other compact SUVs. It goes without saying that with its size and whatever the version, whether Sport or Honda CR-V Touring, you’ll have plenty of room to load the vehicle.

In Brief

At first, we had 4 very competitive SUVs. Comparisons show that the new Honda CR-V performs well and is a wise choice. While the other SUVs have undeniable qualities, the Honda vehicle leads in many respects.

If you’re looking for a competitive Honda CR-V price, or a used Honda CR-VLombardi Honda in Montréal is the place to go for the best advice and the largest inventory of vehicles. We look forward to seeing you!
